Root Chakra (Muladhara): Meaning, Signs of Imbalance & Crystals for Grounding
Your foundation begins here.
When life feels scattered, uncertain or simply too fast, we often find ourselves looking for something that brings us back to centre. In traditional chakra philosophy, that sense of grounding and stability is associated with the Root Chakra, or Muladhara.
The Root Chakra is the first of the seven main chakras and forms the foundation of the chakra system. It is traditionally connected with grounding, stability, security and our connection to the physical world.
If you're beginning your Chakra Code journey, this is where it starts.

What Is the Root Chakra?
The Root Chakra, known as Muladhara in Sanskrit, is traditionally considered the first of the seven major chakras.
It is associated with our sense of foundation — feeling grounded, steady and connected to the world around us.
Think of it like the roots of a tree. Before the tree can grow upward, spread its branches and flourish, it first needs a strong foundation beneath it.
Within traditional chakra practices, the Root Chakra represents that foundation.
Sanskrit name: Muladhara
Position: Base of the spine
Colour: Red
Element: Earth
Associated themes: Grounding • Stability • Security • Strength

What Does Muladhara Mean?
The Sanskrit word Muladhara is commonly interpreted through two words: Mula, meaning root, and Adhara, meaning support or foundation.
That meaning captures the philosophy of this chakra beautifully.
Before focusing on expression, intuition, love or higher awareness, chakra traditions begin with establishing a strong foundation.
It asks a very simple question:
Do I feel grounded in the life I'm living today?

What Does the Root Chakra Represent?
The Root Chakra is traditionally associated with the fundamental aspects of feeling anchored and secure.
These include:
- Grounding and stability
- A sense of security
- Strength and resilience
- Connection with the physical world
- Belonging and foundation
- Being present in the moment
Rather than thinking of the Root Chakra as something that needs to be constantly “fixed,” it can be more useful to think of it as an intention to return to whenever you want to feel more grounded and present.

Signs You May Want to Focus on Your Root Chakra
You don't need to wait until something feels wrong to explore a chakra.
You might simply feel drawn towards Root Chakra practices during a period when you are seeking:
More stability. More grounding. More structure. More connection to the present moment.
Some traditional chakra practices describe periods of restlessness, uncertainty or feeling disconnected as times when a person may choose to focus on grounding.
That doesn't mean a chakra is medically “blocked.” Chakra practices belong to spiritual and wellness traditions and aren't a substitute for medical or mental-health care.
For RIAS, we prefer a simpler approach:
Start with what you're seeking.
If what you're seeking today is grounding, stability or inner strength, the Root Chakra may be a meaningful place to begin.

What Is Root Chakra Imbalance?
You may often hear phrases such as “blocked Root Chakra” or “imbalanced Root Chakra.”
Within traditional chakra philosophy, these terms describe a state in which the qualities associated with a particular chakra are thought to feel less harmonious.
For Muladhara, this usually relates to themes of grounding, stability and security.
There is no scientific diagnostic test for a “blocked chakra,” so rather than treating these ideas as a diagnosis, consider them a framework for self-reflection, mindfulness and intention-setting.
Ask yourself:
What would help me feel more grounded right now?
Sometimes that question is more useful than trying to decide whether something is “blocked.”

How Can You Support the Root Chakra?
Root Chakra practices generally focus on reconnecting with the body, the earth and the present moment.
That doesn't need to become complicated.
Simple practices can include spending time outdoors, walking mindfully, meditation, breathwork, creating consistent daily routines, practising gratitude or setting a grounding intention at the beginning of your day.
Crystals and natural stones are also traditionally incorporated into chakra and mindfulness rituals.
And this is where choosing a stone by intention rather than appearance alone becomes interesting.
Best Crystals Traditionally Associated With the Root Chakra
Certain stones have long been associated in crystal and wellness traditions with grounding, stability and protection.
Red Jasper
With its rich earthy-red colour, Red Jasper is one of the stones most commonly associated with the Root Chakra.
It is traditionally connected with grounding, stability, strength and endurance, making it a natural choice for someone setting an intention around feeling more anchored and steady.
Black Tourmaline
Black Tourmaline is widely associated in crystal traditions with grounding and protection.
Its deep black appearance also makes it particularly suited to everyday jewellery because it pairs easily with other stones and styles.
Smoky Quartz
Smoky Quartz is traditionally associated with grounding, clarity and releasing what no longer serves you.
Its translucent earthy tones make it a softer alternative for those who want grounding stones without an entirely dark bracelet.
Hematite
Hematite is often associated with grounding, focus and stability.
Its distinctive metallic appearance also makes it particularly attractive in contemporary stone jewellery.
Tiger Eye
Tiger Eye is often connected with confidence, courage, focus and grounded action.
Although it can be associated with more than one chakra depending on the tradition being followed, it pairs particularly well with grounding stones such as Red Jasper.
And that combination leads us to one of our favourite Root Chakra-inspired pairings.
RIAS Picks for Grounding & Stability
Rather than choosing a bracelet simply because a stone looks beautiful, Chakra Code encourages you to begin with an intention.
If grounding and stability are what you're seeking, explore pieces featuring stones traditionally associated with those qualities.
Tiger Eye & Red Jasper Bracelet

How to Use a Root Chakra Bracelet
There isn't one compulsory way to wear a crystal bracelet.
The most meaningful approach is often the simplest: give the bracelet an intention.
Before wearing it, take a moment to decide what you want it to represent for you.
Perhaps:
I want to remain grounded when things around me feel hectic.
Or:
I want to approach today with strength and stability.
The bracelet then becomes a physical reminder of that intention throughout your day.
That's very much the philosophy behind RIAS Chakra Code:
The stone doesn't replace the intention. It helps you remember it.

A Simple Root Chakra Grounding Ritual
You don't need an elaborate spiritual routine.
Find a quiet moment at the beginning or end of your day.
Hold your bracelet gently in your hand.
Take a few slow breaths and bring your attention back to the present moment.
Think about what grounding means to you today.
Then set your intention.
Root Chakra Affirmation
I am grounded. I am steady. I am present.
Wear your bracelet as a reminder to return to that intention whenever you need it.

What About Pre-Energized Bracelets?
Some RIAS pieces are also offered as part of our Pre-Energized collection.
Where specifically stated on the product, these pieces undergo a RIAS intention-led ritual before being prepared for you. Depending on the stone and ritual, this may include the sun-energized or moon-energized process associated with that particular piece.
We treat this as part of the mindful experience surrounding the jewellery — not as a promise of medical, psychological or supernatural results.

Root Chakra FAQs
Which crystal is best for the Root Chakra?
Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz and Hematite are among the stones commonly associated with the Root Chakra in crystal traditions. Tiger Eye is also frequently paired with grounding stones when the intention includes confidence and focused action.
Which Root Chakra crystal should I choose?
Start with your intention rather than trying to find one universally “best” stone. If you're drawn towards grounding and stability, Red Jasper may appeal to you. For grounding and protection, you may prefer Black Tourmaline. For grounding combined with confidence, a Tiger Eye and Red Jasper combination can be a good fit.
Can I wear a Root Chakra bracelet every day?
Crystal bracelets are commonly worn as everyday jewellery. Follow the care instructions for the particular stones and materials in your bracelet, and avoid unnecessary exposure to chemicals, perfumes and excessive moisture.
Which hand should I wear my Root Chakra bracelet on?
Different crystal traditions offer different interpretations of the left and right wrist. There is no scientifically established “correct” wrist. At RIAS, we suggest choosing whichever wrist feels natural and comfortable unless a particular ritual you're following specifies otherwise.
Can I wear more than one crystal bracelet?
Yes, different stones are commonly worn together. Instead of stacking stones randomly, consider whether their intentions complement one another. Chakra Code is designed to help you make those choices more thoughtfully.
Do crystals actually balance chakras?
Chakras and crystal-energy practices come from spiritual and wellness traditions. Scientific evidence has not established that crystals can physically balance chakras or treat health conditions. They can, however, be incorporated into personal practices such as mindfulness, meditation and intention-setting.
